Engaging mind, body and spirit in a calming atmosphere.
Well trained, caring staff is the cornerstone of the Dorothy Gray Watts Manor West philosophy and mission. Every staff member undergoes specialized training to understand Alzheimer’s and dementia disease. The staff provides skillful, friendly, non judgmental approaches to alleviate agitation, anger and anxiety. The facility is staffed 24 hours a day with a ratio of staff to residents that exceeds those in most special care homes. Every day is fully scheduled with special emphasis at sundown when some residents require extra care. A variety of structured programs take place daily including arts, music, dance, crafts, table games, reminiscing, word and number games and exercise.
This facility has been purposefully designed to accommodate a small number of residents to contribute to a feeling of comfort and calmness (16 rooms with semi-private as needed). A memory box at the entrance to each resident’s room offers a reminder of times past and a link to their new home. Residents are encouraged to furnish their room with personal furniture and mementos to make their new home truly theirs. The shared living and dining spaces are decorated in soft tones to provide a calming atmosphere. The secure garden provides a safe place for walking, outdoor activities and a place to enjoy fresh air. The absence of alarms and overhead intercom messages also contribute to the serene atmosphere. The unobtrusive security system ensures a restraint free and safe environment.
St. John’s recognizes that dementia and Alzheimer’s impacts the entire family. The program includes assisting family members with the challenges of these diseases and support is always available from the staff. Family support is offered through individual counseling and monthly support and potluck dinners with residents, family and staff.
